Sorry for such a lame topic but this question just arose relevant for me because I just exchanged my BMW 750iL (95y) for Mercedes-Benz E430 (99y) and can't be silent.
My BMW was a car. A CAR, I mean. BMW motors show excellent dynamics picking you up right from the low revs so once you tap the pedal it has you engraved into the seat.
This Merc has the same 280HP (because my BMW was downforced because of Japanese regulations) but the driving feeling is quite different. You tap the damn thing and wait and wait and wait. It thinks, scratches its head and when you're ready to release it starts riding.
4.3L is a big motor you'd say, it should drive like a dream. Sure, it doesn't notice if the car is empty or you have 5 drunken friends with you but it just doesn't have all the dynamics of a BMW. Merc makes automobile motors, while BMW makes avia ones, period.
My favorite epithet is calling this E430 a sofa on wheels. This is how it feels. It takes you comfortably to the place you go, it can even take you there fast. But it won't ever resemble the power you once had, the days when you didn't cry in your pillow at nights.
